Why Most Home Routines Fall Short
Most people apply their skincare products in the wrong order, wait too little time between steps, or skip key categories altogether. The difference between a mediocre and a professional result usually isn't the price of the products — it's the technique, sequencing, and consistency.
In a salon facial, we follow a strict sequence based on skin science: cleanse, exfoliate, extract, treat, mask, tone, serum, moisturise, protect. At home, you can replicate this process with the right products and a little patience.
"Your skin absorbs products best when applied in the right order. Lightest to heaviest, water-based before oil-based. This isn't preference — it's chemistry." — Priya Nair, Lead Esthetician
The 7-Step Professional Home Facial
Do this routine once or twice a week as a treatment, in addition to your daily morning and evening basics.
Double Cleanse
Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to remove makeup, SPF, and sebum. Follow immediately with a water-based gel or foam cleanser to clean the skin itself. This two-step cleanse ensures your active ingredients can actually penetrate rather than sitting on top of residue.
Exfoliate
Use a gentle chemical exfoliant — a low-percentage AHA (glycolic or lactic acid) or BHA (salicylic acid) — rather than a physical scrub. Apply, leave for 5–10 minutes, then rinse. This dissolves dead skin cells and preps your skin for everything that follows. We recommend Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant or an AHA toner.
Targeted Serum
This is the most important step. Apply your most potent treatment product while skin is freshly exfoliated and bare. Vitamin C for brightness, retinol for anti-aging (evening only), hyaluronic acid for hydration, or niacinamide for pore refinement. Press gently into skin — don't rub.
Facial Massage (2–3 minutes)
Using clean hands or a gua sha tool, massage in upward, outward strokes for 2–3 minutes. This boosts lymphatic drainage, reduces puffiness, improves circulation, and helps your serum absorb deeper. Focus on jaw, cheekbones, forehead, and neck.
Treatment Mask (10–15 minutes)
Choose based on your skin concern: clay mask for oiliness and congestion, hydrating sheet mask for dryness, brightening mask for dullness. La Mer's Lifting Contour Serum Mask is exceptional — used in our Velvet Facial. Leave for 10–15 minutes while you relax.
Toner or Essence
After removing your mask, apply a hydrating toner or essence with a cotton pad or by pressing into skin with palms. This rebalances pH and prepares skin for your moisturiser. Look for ingredients like glycerin, ceramides, or centella asiatica.
Moisturise and Protect
Lock everything in with your regular moisturiser. If doing this routine in the daytime, finish with SPF 30 or higher — always. Skipping SPF after exfoliation is the single biggest mistake that undoes all your skincare work.

When to Visit the Salon Instead
A home routine maintains your skin between professional treatments, but it cannot fully replace a salon facial. You should book a professional treatment when:
- You want extractions (never attempt these at home without training)
- You need a chemical peel beyond 10% AHA
- You have persistent breakouts, congestion, or skin concerns
- You want LED light therapy or professional massage techniques
- You're preparing for a special event and need guaranteed results
We recommend professional facials every 4–6 weeks alongside your home routine for optimal results. Book your Velvet Facial here.
