What Exactly Is Balayage?
Balayage (pronounced bah-lee-AHJE) is a French word meaning "to sweep" or "to paint." Unlike traditional highlights that use foils to saturate sections of hair, balayage is a freehand colouring technique where colour is painted directly onto the hair in soft, feathered strokes — mimicking the natural lightening effect of the sun.
The result is a naturally graduated, multi-tonal colour that looks as though you've spent the summer outdoors. There are no harsh lines, no obvious regrowth, and no tell-tale stripes. It's the most requested colour technique at Velvet Rose — and for good reason.
"The beauty of balayage is that it works with your hair rather than against it. Every placement is individual to your face shape, hair texture, and lifestyle." — Elena Marchetti, Creative Director
Balayage vs Highlights: What's the Difference?
This is the question we hear most in consultations. Here's a clear comparison:
- Traditional highlights use foil to fully saturate sections of hair from root to tip, creating uniform, even results with visible grow-out at the roots every 6–8 weeks.
- Balayage is painted on, leaving roots naturally dark and lightening gradually towards the mid-lengths and ends. There is no visible "line" of regrowth — your roots simply blend beautifully as your hair grows.
- Result: Balayage looks more natural and requires less frequent salon visits — typically every 10–16 weeks versus 6–8 weeks for traditional highlights.
Which Balayage Technique Is Right for You?
Balayage is not a one-size-fits-all technique. During your consultation at Velvet Rose, we assess your natural base colour, hair texture, skin tone, and lifestyle before recommending one of the following approaches:
Classic Balayage
Soft, subtle face-framing pieces and a natural gradient through the lengths. Perfect for first-time clients or those wanting a barely-there sun-kissed effect without dramatic change.
Full Balayage
More saturation of colour throughout the lengths for a brighter, more dimensional look. Ideal if you want a significant lightening effect while keeping your roots natural.
Babylights with Balayage
Ultra-fine, delicate highlights are added first, then balayage is painted over the top. This creates the most natural-looking, multi-dimensional result — as if you were born with it.
Bronde Balayage
A warm blend of brown and blonde tones. The most popular choice for brunettes wanting to go lighter without committing to full blonde, or for blondes who want to add warmth and depth.
How Long Does Balayage Take?
One of the most common questions — and the honest answer is: it depends. Balayage is not a quick service. Here's what to expect time-wise at Velvet Rose:
- First-time / subtle balayage: 2.5–3 hours
- Full balayage with toner: 3–4 hours
- Balayage + haircut + blowout: 4–5 hours
- Colour correction to balayage: 5–7 hours (across 1–2 sessions)
We always allocate ample time — rushing a balayage results in uneven application and patchy results. Plan for a luxurious afternoon in the salon.
Balayage Maintenance: How to Keep It Looking Fresh
Balayage is marketed as "low maintenance" — and while it does grow out beautifully, maintaining the quality of your colour requires a consistent home care routine.
Use a Colour-Safe Shampoo
Regular shampoos contain harsh sulphates that strip colour. We recommend Kérastase Blond Absolu or Olaplex No.4 for coloured hair. These preserve your toner and keep your ends bright.
Tone at Home Between Visits
Blonde and lightened hair naturally shifts brassy over time. Using a purple or blue toning shampoo once a week counteracts this — leave it on for 3–5 minutes, then rinse.
Deep Condition Weekly
Lightened hair is more porous and prone to dryness. A weekly deep conditioning mask (we love Kérastase Masque Magistral) keeps your colour looking glossy and your hair strong.
Protect from Heat
Always apply a heat protectant before blow drying or using hot tools. Lightened hair is more vulnerable to heat damage, which can cause colour to fade quickly and ends to appear dull.
Top tip: Book your toner touch-up appointment every 6–8 weeks even if you don't need more lightening. A gloss treatment takes just 20 minutes and completely refreshes your colour for another two months.
How Much Does Balayage Cost?
The cost of balayage varies based on your hair length, the amount of lightening required, and whether you add a toner or haircut. At Velvet Rose, our pricing starts from:
- Face-framing balayage (partial): from $120
- Full balayage: from $180
- Balayage + toner/gloss: from $220
- Balayage + cut + blowout: from $280
We always provide an exact quote during your consultation before any service begins. The prices above are starting rates for medium-length hair.
Is Balayage Suitable for Your Hair Type?
Balayage works on almost every hair type and texture, but some considerations apply:
- Dark hair: May require multiple sessions to achieve lighter results without damage. We always prioritise the health of your hair over the speed of lightening.
- Previously coloured hair: A consultation is essential. We assess the current state of your hair before advising on achievable results.
- Fine hair: Balayage tends to work beautifully — the soft placement adds dimension without the heaviness of full highlights.
- Curly or wavy hair: Absolutely! Balayage enhances natural texture and movement. The freehand technique works exceptionally well on curls.
